Kent Maps Online - Marketing

Alongside my studies, I worked with Kent Maps Online - a local heritage initiative where writers, scholars, and creatives collaborate to celebrate the richness of Kent’s culture. In this role, I worked across editorial, design, and digital media, bringing cultural stories to life by researching and illustrating articles, creating striking visual assets, and managing dynamic social media content. I also wrote features and event coverage, developing the ability to turn complex subjects into narratives that are engaging, accessible, and genuinely exciting to read.

Last November, I was commissioned to design a vintage-style poster for Canterbury’s annual Being Human festival, which set out to bring a touch of the seaside to people living with dementia. With such a thoughtful audience in mind, the project quickly became a lesson in the art of simplicity - especially when trying to blend Canterbury with beach vibes without overwhelming the viewer. I kept the cathedral as the calm, steady focal point and surrounded it with gentle seaside touches like palm trees, using soft, muted tones to create a warm sense of nostalgia. The result felt soothing, familiar, and uplifting - exactly the atmosphere I hoped to capture.

This banner was, according to Dr. Carolyn Oulton, “the star of the show” at the Kent Maps Online symposium. It was my first experience designing a ‘professional’ banner, and in turn, I learnt that there is a lot more to marketing than simply creating a pretty picture. For example, the font was exclusive to Canterbury Christ Church University so I had to gain permission from the marketing department. Images also had to have exceptionally high resolution due to the large scale of the banner.

Once such issues were resolved, I enjoyed taking to apps like Photoshop and Procreate to design the image, using Canva for inspiration into existing banner compositions. I am confident that the outcome is laid out in a clear, inviting way to illustrate exactly what the database is all about.
